The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) has announced the publication of the 4th edition of 'World Steel Recycling in Figures'
SHANGHAI (Scrap Monster) : The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) has announced the publication of the 4th edition of ‘World Steel Recycling in Figures’, which is a comprehensive compilation of the global ferrous scrap market statistics covering the five-year period between 2008 and 2012.
The main findings in the report are outlined below.
- The usage of steel scrap as raw material for steelmaking remained unchanged at 570m tonnes in 2012. Decrease of scrap usage was reported in China,the EU-27 countries,Japan and Russia. Increased usage of scrap steel was reported by the US and Turkey. Higher steel scrap usage was reported in India and Korea too.
- The proportion of steel scrap used in crude steel production dropped from 37.3% to 36.8% in 2012. The increased usage in 2011 is mainly attributed to the rise in crude steel output.
- Global annual scrap use in iron and steel foundries has amounted to between 56m and 74m tonnes in recent years.
- The worldwide total external steel scrap trade touched 106.6m tonnes in 2012, which is 1.9% lower than 2011.
- In 2012, the US was the world’s leading exporter of steel scrap. Turkey was the top importer of US steel scraps.
- Turkey emerged the leading importer of steel scrap in 2012 with total imports touching 22.4m tonnes. The steel scrap imports by Korea and India surged during the year wheras the Chinese imports dropped substantially.
- All the top four exporters-the US, the EU-27, Japan and Russia recorded increased exports in 2012. The US exports touched a high of 21.4m tonnes. The exports by the EU-27,Japan and Russia increased by 2.1%, 57.9% and 7.6% respectively.
The report highlights the global importance of scrap as a raw material for steelworks and foundries.
