US steel imports during April surge 4% month-on-month

According to the latest American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) data release, the US steel imports during the month of April have improved month-on-month

NEW YORK (Scrap Monster) : According to the latest American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) data release, the US steel imports during the month of April have improved month-on-month.

 The country’s total steel imports in April this year are 2,680,000 net tons (nt), which is 4% higher than the March final import figures. The total finished steel imports were 2,087,000  net tons (nt) which is 1% higher than the finished steel imports during March.

The US total steel imports year-to-date  are 10,375,000 net tons (nt), which is 12% lower when compared to the net imports during same period the previous year. The YTD total finished steel imports were 8,178,000 net tons (nt) which is 9% lower year-on-year.

The imports of plates-in-coils surged by 61% in comparison with the imports during March.The other finished steel products which witnessed jump during April were standard pipe (up 43 percent); cut-length plates (up 43 percent) and wire rods (up 39 percent).

The major exporter of finished steel products to US was South Korea. The country’s imports from South Korea during April were 248,000 net tons, but lower than March imports by 22%. The other major sources of imports were Japan(208,000 net tons), Germany (115,000 net tons), China (106,000 net tons) and Taiwan (81,000 net tons). The imports from Japan, Germany and Taiwan were up during April, but those from China slipped by 22%.
