US steel exports during the quarter down 12.6%

The recent statistics released by the American Institute for International Steel (AIIS) suggests that the US exports during the first quarter of the year declined year-on-year

NEW YORK (Scrap Monster) : The recent statistics released by the American Institute for International Steel (AIIS) suggests that the US exports during the first quarter of the year declined year-on-year.

The cumulative steel exports by US during the period Jan to March totaled 3,213,709 net tons. The total exports were down by 12.6% in comparison with the exports of 3,677,097 net tons during the same period in 2012.

The steel exports to Asian countries witnessed largest decline of 26.5% totaling to 150,694 net tons during the quarter this year when compared to 204,998 net tons during Q1 2012. The exports to Africa also slowed down by 22.8% to 24,277 net tons in Q1 2013 in comparison with 31,454 net tons during same period a year ago. US steel exports to EU countries also slumped by 20.1% to 102,821 net tons from 128,697 net tons during the same period previous year. Exports to Non-NAFTA Western Hemisphere countries and NAFTA countries have dropped by 14.5% and 11% year-on-year.

The exports to Venezuela, Taiwan and Brazil have fallen drastically by 81.6%, 80.3% and 79.7% respectively during the first quarter year-on-year. On the other hand, the quarterly exports to Panama, Vietnam and Dominican Republic surged by 221.8%, 188.2% and 160% year-on-year.

The country’s total steel exports during March ’13 were 1.1 million net tons compared to 1.204 million net tons during March 2012, a decline of 8.6%.
