Connecticut has become the first state to adopt mattress recycling bill, which authorizes the State to levy recycling costs from customers

WASHINGTON (Scrap Monster) : Connecticut has become the first state to adopt mattress recycling bill, which authorizes the State to levy recycling costs from customers.

The House of Representatives approved the mattress recycling legislation by vote. According to the legislation, customers will have to pay nearly $8 to $ 12 extra for the mattress at the time of purchase. This is to cover the end-of-life recycling.

The proposal has been under active discussions and negotiations between the legislators and mattress producers for over two years. The proposed bill is aimed to promote mattress recycling and prevent the mattresses being dumped into landfills.

According to estimates, the Connecticut state alone account for around 350,000 discarded mattresses yearly. The estimated disposal cost per mattress is $3.8 thus costing $1.3 million as disposal costs alone.

The Connecticut mattress recycling legislation has no doubt set an example for other States to follow suit.
