US steel import permit applications drop in April

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) report indicates that the net US steel import permit applications received during the month of April has shown a decline of 3% month-on-month basis

NEW YORK (Scrap Monster) : The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) report indicates that the net US steel import permit applications received during the month of April has shown a decline of 3% month-on-month basis.

The total steel import permit applications for the month of April was 2,576,000 net tons, which is 3% lower than the figures of 2,650,000 net tons permit applications in March.

On the basis of the April 2013 total steel import permits applications, the annualized figures for 2013 would be 30,529,000 net tons down 9% compared to the 33,475,000 net tons imported in 2012.

The finished steel import permit applications for the month of April was 2,003,000 net tons, which is 2% higher than the preliminary imports figure of 1,967,000 net tons in March.

On the basis of the April 2013 finished steel import permit applications, the annualized figures for 2013 would be 23,998,000 net tons down 7% compared to the 25,826,000 net tons imported in 2012.

In April, the highest number of finished steel import permit applications were for South Korea (275,000 nt), followed by Japan (220,000 nt), China (124,000 nt ), Germany (114,000 nt ) and Turkey (72,000 nt).
