ANKARA (Scrap Monster) : According to the latest data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), the steel scrap imports of the country fell significantly during the first quarter of the year.

The country’s total steel scrap imports during the first quarter (Jan to Mar) this year amounted to 4.3 million mt, which is 18.6 lower when compared to the imports during the first quarter 2012. The value of imports has dropped significantly by 27.5% year-on-year during the quarter.

The imports of scrap from CIS witnessed steepest decline during the quarter. The total imports were reduced to 384,256 mt, which is 36.7% lower than the previous quarter and 40.8% lower than same quarter the previous year. The Turkish scrap imports from EU countries during the quarter were 2.1 million mt. The EU imports fell by 31.8% compared to the previous quarter and by 30.7% year-on-year. However, the country’s scrap imports from North America grew quarter-on-quarter to reach 1.6 million mt.
