WASHINGTON (Scrap Monster) : According to US Geological Survey, the iron ore production by US declined significantly during the month of February. The latest released Mineral Industry Survey also mentions that the iron ore exports from US to Canada and Mexico have fallen sharply during the month.

According to data, the country’s total iron ore production during February was 3.9 million tonnes. The monthly production has declined by 7.1% from the previous month and by 8.7% from the production during February 2012.

There has been a corresponding drop in iron ore shipments during February this year. The total shipment amounted to 661,000, which has plunged by over 78% when compared to the 3.1 million tonnes shipment recorded during the previous month. The shipments have declined 15.7% year-on-year.

The iron ore exports from the country sank during the month. The total iron ore exports during the month were 483,000 tonnes, which is 53% lower when compared to the previous month. The exports to Canada plunged by nearly 60% month-on-month whereas those to Mexico fell by over 15% month-on-month.

The country’s pig iron production during the month totaled 2.8 million tonnes, which is 9.8% lower when compared to the previous month and 9.5% lower when compared to same moth the previous year.

The crude steel production using blast furnaces by the country during the month of February was 2.5 million tonnes, which is 7.6% lower when compared to the previous month and 4.9% lower when compared to February last year.

The country’s crude steel production through electric arc furnaces during the month of February was 4 million tonnes, which is 5.8% lower when compared to the previous month and 9.8% lower when compared to February 2012.
