NEW DELHI (Scrap Monster) : The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has joined hands with Attero-an integrated electronics asset management firm to promote collection and recycling of e-Waste in four major cities of India.
The joint initiative named ‘Clean e-India’ invites the involvement of manufacturers, distributors, informal sectors and consumers, who could contribute much to help create public awareness in safe disposal of e-waste. Attero plans to rope in informal waste collectors who presently handle nearly 95% of the disposed e-waste.
The integrated programme would be launched in four major cities of the country initially. The selected cities are Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad. The first phase of the program is expected to span out into three years. The ‘Clean e-India’ initiative would help integrate informal waste collectors to ensure higher collection and recycling of e-Waste at minimum costs. Attero aims to educate the civil society and the general public about the hazards of wrong recycling practices. IFC and Attero will set up collection centers and develop an online tracking and monitoring system for e-waste flows.
The initiative is being supported by a host of electronics majors including Wipro, Samsung, Voltas, Acer, Videocon, and Haier.
The per-capita e-waste generation is much lesser in India right now when compared to US and Europe. But studies show that in the next 5 to 7 years, there will be a massive pile of e-waste in the country. The study report by the United Nations predict that e-waste from computers would jump by 500% in India by 2020. The e-waste from discarded mobile phones would be 18 times higher in India by 2020.
