TORONTO (Scrap Monster) : Protests erupted on reports that the devastating landslide has buried alive nearly 83 miners at the Gyama village mine in Maizhokunggar County, around 70 kilometres off capital Lhasa.

Protestors in large numbers gathered in front of the Toronto Stock Exchange building Wednesday demanding that the Vancouver-based China Gold International Resources stop its destructive mining operations in Gyama township. The demonstrators included members of the Students for a Free Tibet (SFT)-an organization of youngsters that works towards Tibetan freedom and dozens of Tibetan-Canadians.

The banner read “China Gold: Putting Profits before Life”. The members of SFT Canada wing demonstrated the fatal impacts of reckless mining activities by simulating a landslide in front of the TSX. The protestors indicated  that Tibet is not benefited by the huge revenues generated by the mining activities in their land  as the Chinese authorities do little to spend on betterment of  Tibetan societies.

The Gyama region is said to have immense resources of copper, chromium, bauxite and other precious minerals and metals. China Gold International International Resources, whose controlling shareholder is the state-owned China National Gold Group Corp, operates in the region through its subsidiary Huatailong Mining Development.

The study conducted earlier by scientists found that the mining activities were being conducted in the region without proper assessment of the environmental impacts. The study further had stated that the mining exploration in the region could pollute surface water and cause serious threat to environment.

The protestors pointed out that the mining company ignored all the warnings and carried out extensive mining activities with no respect to the living community surrounding the region. The rampant excavation has destructed the balance of ecological system and has ruined lives of future generations.
