HAMILTON (Scrap Monster) : Bermuda observed E-Waste recycling day wherein general public were encouraged to drop off their electronic waste to a common collection point.

The Ministry of Public Works declared the event successful and thanked the general public for their increased participation this year.

E-Waste Recycling day was observed as part of the Government’s initiative to promote recycling activities in the country. The members of public were allowed to drop off their electronic waste at the Tynes Bay Waste-to-Energy Facility, Devoshire.

Residents were encouraged to bring their old, worn out electronics to be recycled. Any small appliance powered by power cord or batteries were accepted. This includes hairdryers, toasters, phones,CRT’s,typewriters, laptops, microwaves, children’s toys, flashlights, computer and stereo equipment to name a few.

All electronic items collected through this programme are shipped to a United States Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) certified facility outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where they are disassembled in a safe and hygienic working environment. The e-waste thus shipped is handled with maximum concern for the environment and worker safety.

Metals are sorted by type, shipped to smelters and turned back into sheet metal and then into new consumer goods.

Last year the Waste Management section recycled 134 x 20ft shipping container loads of recycling, exporting 84 container loads to the US recycling market and re-using 50 container loads of crushed glass in local construction projects.
