HALIFAX (Scrap Monster) : Nova Scotia based Northern Pulp is being ordered to contain the air pollution from its paper mill. It is the second consecutive time that the paper mill is being warned of excessive sulphur emissions leading to air pollution.
According to inspectors, the levels for particulate and total reduced sulphur emissions from the unit exceeded the allowable levels.
The findings from the tests carried out at the N.S paper mill were recently handed over to the Nova Scotia Department of Environment. The Department upon studying the findings report ordered the company to fix the air pollution at the earliest.
As per the Department directive, the company has been granted time until September this year, by which they have to come up with a solution to address the air pollution issue.
Earlier in April 2011, the company was ordered to install air pollution equipment. The federal government had sanctioned $28 million as part of ‘Green Transformation Program’ to help implement mechanisms to counter the environmental issues. As per the company sources, the amount was utilized towards upgrades to its boiler and odor control equipment.
The company sources hinted at appointing a consultant who will study the issue April onwards so that a detailed study report could be generated well before the deadline.
