DETROIT (Scrap Monster): Sims Recycling Solutions amassed more than one million pounds of electronic waste for recycling to celebrate Earth Day this year.
The company collected items ranging from consumer products to business and industry materials collected during various events or at one of the company’s facilities across the United States.
During fiscal year 2009, output from Sims Recycling Solutions centres contributed to Sims Metal Management's handling of over 13 million tonnes of ferrous and non ferrous materials. The use of these materials, as opposed to virgin materials, saved more than 45 gigajoules of energy, enough to provide power for more than 6.3 million households.
According to EPA, electronic waste is one of the most common municipal wastes in America. In 2008, 3.16 million tons of eâ€waste was generated in the U.S. Of this, only 430,000 tons or 13.6 % was recycled. The rest was trashed – in landfills or incinerators.
The initiatives like Sims Recycling Solutions are welcomed as the local health centres consider it as an efficient channel to deal with electronic waste.
In North America, Sims Recycling Solutions has 13 sites in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Ontario, South Carolina and Tennessee.
