RAUNHEIM (Scrap Monster): The dramatic rise in plastic scrap prices is giving a hard time to the recyclers all over the world.
According to latest report by Plasteurope, the supply of plastic scrap is not able to meet the high demand and as converters lead to stock a large proportion of it for their own needs the result is exceptionally high prices for scrap.
According to Pekutherm, the price of acrylic glass scrap has risen from EUR 0.65/kg in the autumn of 2009 – the height of the economic crisis – to a current average of EUR 1/kg.
Pekutherm, a manufacturer of clear thermoplastic recyclate and recompounds, is reportedly paying the highestprices for PMMA and polycarbonate scraps since its establishment in 1985.
Such high price levels are expected to be the result of an ongoing economic recovery, rising demand for secondary plastics along with a simultaneous shortage in supply.
