The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) has brought Pompeii back to life, revealing the many gold and silver treasures left behind after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. The relics show how gold’s safe-haven appeal dates back to Ancient Rome, but also how silver may have been seen as even more valuable. Speaking with Laura Vigo, archeologist and curator of the MMFA’s Pompeii exhibit, Daniela Cambone learns that gold may even have been used to ward off evil.
