Why should I recycle my computer?

The rate of new technology in the last 20 years has created millions of obsolete computers and other electronics (e-waste). Because these devices often contain contaminants such as lead and mercury, Colorado law requires that residential and business electronics recycle all electronics. Dumping electronics in landfills has been banned in Colorado. Business are prohibited from dumping electronics by EPA regulation.

In addition, e-waste contain materials (such as metals and engineered plastics) which require considerable energy to process and manufacture. These materials can be recovered through recycling, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving energy and resources by extracting fewer raw materials.

The continued high demand for a cheaper, and faster computer has given the ability to upgrade every 2-3 years. This, creating a whole lot of unwanted older computers and electronic equipment. With businesses and home users needing the newest computer to run the latest games and software, this creates a growing need for proper disposal of obsolete equipment. Past estimates have shown that as low as 10% of obsolete computers have been properly recycled. The rest have ended up in landfills, storage, burned in incinerators, and in third world counties that have no modern means or education to properly handle the material. This material often ending up in untrained hands to be taken apart under hazardous conditions.

To get control of e-waste, many states have begun enforcing regulations for electronics that could cost a violator thousands of dollars for each device disposed of improperly. Even if you were being a kind and gave your computer to charity or to a friend, you could still be held responsible if your device ends up in a landfill.

Computer Recycling

Computer recycling and the recycling of other electronics is not new. Just in recent years has this become a political topic (Action Recycling has recycled computers and other electronics for over 20 years, long before regulation laws began hitting the political tables). Computer recycling has become cause for concern because of the mass numbers of computers being made and just as quickly, becoming obsolete. Back when computers were a new and a very expensive technology, businesses and homes alike held on to their investment for several years. Now, with faster and cheaper computers and a much stronger economy than 20 years ago, computers have become a part of business and homes just as much as owning a telephone. With a constant desire for advanced technology and a continued cheaper product, the computer market is through the roof. In just the United States 10 million obsolete computers will be replaced every year. This is promoted by a faster and cheaper computer that is making it simple and common for a business to upgrade every couple of years. This is why politicians have scrambled to find solutions and began regulations that not only now protect our current environment, but also a solution for the future.

Computers contain very hazardous elements such as lead, cadmium and mercury. If billions of computers and monitors end up carelessly in landfills, this would mean disaster to our enviroment. Not only is this a concern today but also a concern for the many, many more obsolete products in our near future. Govenrments have put pressure on the manufactures to make recycling these items in the future more compatible with modern recycling techniques but regardless, recycling computers and electronics is here to stay and responible disposal will be that of the cosumer. Computers as well as many other electronics are growing to record sales every year, more people are replacing old technology every couple years, including many commmon products like cellphones, MP3 players, PDA’s and digital camera. These are all products that our future generation is growing with and becoming dependant on – telling us the foreseeable future and challege in proper handling and disposal.

Electronics Recycling

Not only is it important to recycle your computer, it is also important to recycle other electronics as well. Some electronics will contain some of the same hazardous metals and substances that are found in computers. Although some are not regulated as of yet it is very important to begin recycling now before it does becomes a problem in our landfills and regulation begin. Other electronics including your VCR, DVD, Stereo, telephone, microwave, and many other devices. Most of these products also contain poisonous lead contamination. All electronics contain a combination of black tin and lead which give you a common product that is called solder. This metal often bonds electronic components to a small circuit board. Most electronics will be recycled for free, but please call to get more information about a specific device.

Other Recycling

Another problem is the amount of metal that reach landfills. Enough steel is used in one day in the United State that you run a pipeline from New York to Los Angeles and then back to New York again, but we will only see about 60% of this being recycled. Can you imagine all the space this is taking in our landfills?   Several common metal products that are worth good money include aluminum cans, aluminum siding, aluminum gutters, aluminum car parts, electrical copper wire, copper pipe, phone wire, plumbing brass and much more.

Action Recycling is currently buying all metals such as copper, brass, aluminum, aluminum cans, radiators, stainless steel, steel and iron, die cast, insulated wires, lead, auto and truck batteries, printed circuit boards, catalytic converters, zinc, nickel, gold (rings, jewelry, solids, bars, coins), silver, platinum, palladium.
