Acetal (Delrin)

Acetal (Delrin)

Acetal provides high strength and stiffness while offering enhanced dimensional stability and ease of machining. A semi-crystalline material, Acetal also has a low coefficient of friction and good wear properties—especially in wet environments. Because it absorbs little moisture, Acetal demonstrates excellent stability for close-tolerance machined parts. In high-moisture or submerged applications, Acetal bearings can outperform nylon 4 to 1. This material is resistant to a wide range of chemicals, including many solvents. Acetal is available in a broad range of grades with properties addressing specific needs.
Polyoxymethylene (POM), also known as acetal, polyacetal and polyformaldehyde, is an engineering thermoplastic used in precision parts requiring high stiffness, low friction and excellent dimensional stability. As with many other synthetic polymers, it is produced by different chemical firms with slightly different formulas and sold variously by such names as Delrin, Celcon, Duracon and Hostaform.

Typical applications for injection-molded POM include high performance engineering components such as small gear wheels, ball bearings, ski bindings, fasteners, knife handles, and lock systems. The material is widely used in the automotive and consumer electronics industry.

Delrin and acetal

Both names refer to a class of polymers known as polyoxymethylene or (POM), POM is also known as acetal, polyacetal and polyformaldehyde which are forms of an engineering thermoplastic used in precision parts that require high stiffness, low friction and excellent dimensional stability. Examples of parts that are frequently machined from the acetal plastics, incuding Delrin, are wear strips, rollers, and bushings and other applications requiring a combination of strength, low moisture absorbtion, dimensional stability and chemical resistance.

Delrin is DuPont’s trade name for acetal homopolymer. Acetal is the name generally used in the plastics industry to refer to acetal copolymer.

Homopolymers are polymers that contain only a single type of subunit in their chain and copolymers are polymers containing a mixture of more than one type of subunit in their chain.

Acetal is the common name for a family of thermoplastics with the chemical name "PolyOxyMethylene", or POM. Acetal is available in two general types of resins: Copolymer acetal (POM-C), and homopolymer acetal (POM-H); commonly called Delrin. Each type of acetal has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of Delrin:

Higher Crystallinity = somewhat better mechanical properties includind tensile strength, resistance to creep and impact strength.

Disadvantages of Delrin:

Smaller number of resin producers can lead to higher prices, although at Colorado Plastics we can typically offer both Delrin and acetal at the same price
Centerline porosity = midline cavitation at centerline of plate depth or crystalline dot at center of rod diameter.

Advantages of Acetal:

No centerline porosity
Better property retention at elevated temperatures
Frequently has lower resin and stock shape price
Available as FDA compliant n both black and natural = white colors
Better chemical resistance to fuels and solvents.

Disadvantages of Acetal:

Lower crystallinity = somewhat lesser mechanical properties (although some data shows this difference goes away over 12 - 24 months of age of plastic parts)

Copolymer Grades

Acetal Copolymer

(AcetronGP, Tecaform) Manufactured from resin specifically formulated for wear applications, Acetal copolymer offers excellent mechanical and bearing properties plus dimensional stability, stiffness, and low water absorption. It is resistant to hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and hot water. Standard colors are natural and black. Natural color is FDA, USDA, NSF, Canada AG and 3A-Dairy compliant. Applications include bushings, rollers, and pulleys.

NEW Tecaform AH ID

Tecaform AH ID is the first commercially available thermoplastic that can be detected by the standard metal detection equipment typically used in quality inspection. This advancement in technology will reduce the risk of product contamination, and help minimize the possibility of significant financial loss. Tecaform AH ID can be used in a variety of food industry applications requiring good strength and toughness, dimensional stability, wear resistance and the ability to operate in a wet environment with little moisture absorption.

Other available copolymer grades: SD-Static Dissipative

Homopolymer Grades

Delrin

Delrinis a family of Acetal Homopolymer whose properties include low water absorption and superior creep resistance, tensile strength, and fatigue endurance. It is resistant to hydrocarbons, solvents, and neutral chemicals and is recommended for bushings, fittings, impellers, and other mechanical and electrical applications.

DelrinAF 100 Blend

DelrinAF 100 Blend is a unique thermoplastic material for use in moving parts in which low friction and long wear are important. It is a combination of 13% PTFE fibers uniformly dispersed in DelrinAcetal resin. This combination retains 90% of the strength that is inherent in unfilled Delrinyet offers better wear characteristics. All PTFE modified grades are brown.

DelrinAF 100

DelrinAF 100 is an Acetal resin that contains 20%TeflonTFE fluorocarbon fibers. The resulting material is nearly as strong, tough, and dimensionally stable as Delrinbut with excellent lubrication characteristics. Applications include antifriction parts, rollers, and gears.

Acetal Homopolymer with PTFE Powder

(AcetronHPV, Tecaform HPV 13) is similar to DelrinAF 100 that instead of Teflonfibers it contains 13%Teflonpowder. Because powder is dispersed throughout the material, excellent machinability is achieved. This product also offers higher tensile strength compared with fiber-reinforced material.

Other available homopolymer grades: Delrin570 - (20% glass filled), Delrin500CL –(chemically lubricated)
