York-based company opens new recycling facility, triples processing capacity

ERIE (Scrap Monster): York, Pennsylvania-based Penn Waste Inc. has announced opening of a new recycling facility at Manchester, Pennsylvania. The new facility with BHS single-stream sorting equipment employs optical sorting technology. The expansion is expected to triple the company’s waste processing capabilities.

The 96,000 square-foot recycling facility incorporates advanced proprietary single-stream processing system designed and installed by Eugene, Oregon-based Bulk Handling Systems (BHS). The new system is designed to improve recovery rates significantly. Further, it expects to triple Penn Waste’s processing capabilities. According to estimates, the old system had processing capacity to handle up to 10 tons of recyclables per hour. The new recycling facility upgrades the plant’s processing capacity to 35 tons of recyclables per hour.

According to Penn Waste Inc., the new building and equipment upgrades reinforces the company’s commitment to local and surrounding community by increasing sustainable practices in the region. The new facility is one of the largest in the region and the nation, it added.

The company had processed 81,000 tons of recyclables during the entire year 2014. With the commissioning of new facility with upgraded equipment, it hopes to double its 2014 rate over the next few years.

The new facility also features ultramodern optical sorting technology from Nashville, Tennessee-based National Recovery Technologies (NRT). The technology enables efficient and speedy separation of recyclables with less contamination.
