Waste tire regulation to eliminate stockpiled waste tires in Colorado

DENVER (Scrap Monster): The legislation signed by Colorado Governer John Hickenlooper during early-June is expected to eliminate the stockpiled waste tires in the state. The approval of the bill is viewed as the first step towards cleaning up of the two monofills that are estimated to contain nearly 60 million tires. The mammoth piles are said to pose potential risk to environment.

The Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) commended passing of the waste tire legislation. The Association for the past several years had been fighting hard to enact a measure that could clean up the pile of tires in Colorado. RMA expressed satisfaction over passage of the bill and hoped that the legislation could clean up the monofills and create new market for discarded end-of-life tires.

The state reportedly has the highest inventory of waste tires. Nearly 25 years back, the tire stockpiles totaled nearly 1 billion. But the current stock levels are only one-tenth of the earlier level. According to estimates, nearly 80% of the waste tires generated per year are sent to an end use market.

The bipartisan legislation introduced by Representatives Max Tyler and Don Coram is expected to eventually shut down the tire monofills. It also proposes to end the taxpayer subsidy payment to waste tire end users. The waste tire legislation will also reduce the fee on new tire purchases from $1.50 to $0.55.
