Washington's CRT collection rate edged higher in 2014

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Annual Report released by the Washington Materials Management and Financing Authority (WMMFA) for the year 2014 indicates that CRT collection rates increased slightly over the previous year.

The state e-scrap processors handled 10,666 tons of CRT glass during the year, marginally higher by 1.3% when compared with the quantity processed during 2013. The total quantity of e-waste recycled through Washington’s E-Cycle program amounted to 22,181 tons. The total e-scrap collection volumes have declined by nearly 2% when compared with the previous year. The collection rate of televisions witnessed slight increase over the year in 2014, whereas the collected weight of computers and monitors continued to decline.

According to the report, the collected e-waste was handled by seven e-scrap recycling firms in the state. Almost 98% of the collected e-waste collected in 2014 was recycled. Only a small proportion ended up in landfill. The items sent to landfill comprised mainly of wood from TV cabinets, which registered an increase of almost 20% year-on-year. At the same time, recycling of wood increased by 4% in 2014. The report also states that majority of the leaded glass were shipped to India through Mexico.

Also, nearly 550 tons of electronics were resold and reused during 2014. A good share of the reused e-scrap was resold by collectors before being sent to designated e-scrap processors.

WMMFA, funded by electronic manufacturers, co-ordinates the collection and recycling of CRT waste under Washington’s E-Cycle program. It is the manufacturer board-directed authority created by state law to handle the recycling of certain electronics in the state of Washington.
