Mohammed Haneef, "Tall, well-built and charming" international gold smuggler has smuggled more than 1,000kg gold into India, customs officers said. The cops collected limited details of the smuggler from three women, claimed to be his spouses.

The investigators found the handwritten notes and receipts from his one of the residents in 2013 which showed his smuggling nexus being extended to Myanmar, Singapore, Colombo, Chennai and Thrissur. The officers also found many big gold jewelers contacts from his book.

Haneef started smuggling gold from Dubai and Singapore, from Myanmar into Manipur via road. He used his relatives as gold carriers to smuggle the yellow metal from from Myanmar to enter India through the border town of Moreh in Chandel district which has a large Tamil population. His smuggling team hid 5-10 kg gold in electronic gadgets, the officers added.

As India imposed a10% duty on gold import to curb current account deficit, the gold smuggling in the country has spiked more than ever. The officers claim that smugglers are using innovative ways to bring in the metal illegally.
