Vermont officially launches battery recycling program

MIDDLESEX (Scrap Monster): Call2Recycle Inc. in tie-up with the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources has officially announced the launch of the statewide single-use battery recycling program. The announcement to this effect was made on Jan 28th at the Vermont State House. Vermont thus becomes the first state to implement mandated single-use battery recycling plan.

According to Vermont’s Act 139, the mandatory program allows Vermont residents to dispose off their household batteries, including AA, AAA, C, D, among other battery-types at any of the nearly-100 drop-off locations across the state. The program which came into effect effective 2016 is completely free of cost for residents. The program simplifies battery recycling to Vermont residents as they need not have to separate single-use batteries from rechargeable batteries.

As per estimates, 70% of Vermont residents are aware that household batteries can be recycled. However, only 42% have recycled batteries in 2015. This is based on the fact that only 36,000 pounds of used batteries out of over 650,000 pounds sold were collected for recycling. The new recycling initiative is expected to boost battery recycling rates in the state.

Meantime, Vermont has also launched a statewide school battery recycling challenge aimed to increase awareness among students. Vermont schools grades 5 and 6 can participate in the challenge. Interested participants are required to sign-up at www.call2recycle.org/vermont before Feb 18th. The school that collects most batteries (in pounds per student) will be rewarded.

Founded in 1994, Call2Recycle-North America’s first and largest battery stewardship program-is a non-profit organization that collects and recycles batteries at no cost for municipalities, businesses and consumers.
