Vedanta plans to initiate power business in South Africa

Vedanta, the global mining giant, is planning to move over to power generation business in South Africa, as a part of the company’s planned investment of 780 million dollar investment in the country, as procedure to develop the company’s Gamsberg zinc mine, which is noted to be the largest zinc deposit in the world.

CAPETOWN (Scrap monster): The Chief Executive Officer, of the Zinc International Africa & Ireland, which is also the part of the company, Kishore Kumar, stated that the company is very much interested the whole package of resources the country has to offer to the company, which also includes energy resources and also captive energy. He added that, the second phase of development in the company owned Gamsberg mine, will be the procedures of securing energy resources, which will be either captive generation of energy, or in a way which the country can use.

He further stated that, the  company is looking for all kinds of energy resources, which can be anything from, coal powered source of energy, gas based power, solar based energy units, or any other renewable source of energy. The company is looking forward for the policy support from the government of the country, so that the company can start its energy securitization program.

The Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources, Godfrey Oliphant, had travelled to India this month in the need of taking the stock of Vedanta’s mining competency, value addition and benefaction, as the company is starting to mine from the Gmsberg. He had told the company that, the country is not only rich in zinc, but also many other resources. He also stated that, the company, had the strength and potential of power generation, both the captive power, which can be used in the company’s mine for smelting sections, and also the company can generate power which can be used for activities in the country.
