US steel scrap exports rose 16% in January

ALBANY (Scrap Monster): The latest released statistics by the US International Trade Commission (US ITC) shows that the country’s steel scrap export volumes surged higher during the month of January this year.

According to statistics, the country’s total steel scrap exports during January this year were 1.04 million metric tons. This is significantly higher by 16% in comparison with the exports during the same month a year ago. However, the scrap exports during January represent a decline of 2% when compared to the export volumes recorded during December 2014.

The major export destination of US steel scrap during the month was Turkey. The scrap exports to Turkey totaled 334,142 metric tons, declining by 18.3% in comparison with April 2012. Turkey was followed by Taiwan (172,289 metric tons), Korea (121,653 metric tons) and China (35,491 metric tons).

The value of steel scrap exports during January this year totaled $360.8 million. The export value dropped by nearly 9% when compared with $395.5 million recorded during December last year. Also, steel scrap export values were down when compared with $380.9 million during January 2014.
