US Pig Iron Exports Jump Two-Fold in Jan-July ‘17

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest data published by the US Census Bureau indicates that imports of Pig Iron by the US have more than doubled during the initial seven-month period of the year. The imports amounted to $1.04 billion, higher by more than 100% when matched with the imports of $470.35 million during the corresponding period last year. The imports have already surpassed the whole year imports of $947.66 million during 2016.

The top three sources of US pig iron imports were Russia, Ukraine and Brazil. The largest supplier was Russia with exports amounting to $585.3 million. The imports from Russia constituted over 56% of total US pig iron imports and more than doubled over the previous year. The imports from Ukraine too were up sharply by more than 100% to $230.5 million. The supply by Ukraine accounted for 22.17% of total US imports. In third place was Brazil with exports of $162.1 million. The country’s pig iron exports to the US recorded 84% jump over the previous year. Brazil accounted for 16% of total US imports. The other key suppliers were South Africa ($27.4 million) and India ($25.3 million). These top five supplying nations accounted for 99% of the total imports during the initial seven-month period of the year.

Among Customs districts, New Orleans imported 62.14% of all shipments, followed by Mobile and Charleston with market shares of 17% and 15% respectively. Chicago and Wilmington also featured in the top-five list. These five Customs districts accounted for 98% of exports of the US during Jan-July ’17.

Meantime, exports of Pig Iron have registered considerable increase during the first seven months of 2017. The exports surged higher from $5.01 million in Jan-July ’16 to $15.75 million through the first seven months of 2017. It must be noted that the imports were valued at $10.48 million during the full year 2016.

The top export destination of US pig iron was Canada. The exports to Canada totaled $13.6 million, accounting for approximately 87% of total exports by the US. The exports to Mexico and India totaled $1.5 million and $90,000 respectively. Pakistan ($80,000) and the UK ($67,000) were the other leading importers of Pig Iron from the US. The imports by the above five countries accounted for nearly 98% of the total exports by the US during the initial seven-month period of 2017.

Pembina, N.D., Detroit, Laredo, New York City and Atlanta/Savannah emerged as the top five Customs districts, by value of exports. The cumulative shipments by the top five Customs districts amounted to $15.26 million out of the total of $15.75 million.
