US EPA to focus on enhanced CRT recycling efforts

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) convened a two-day summit titled “EPA Summit on Electronics” last week to gather input from industry participants as part of its efforts to boost CRT recycling in the country. The meeting was marked by overwhelming participation of over 50 concerned parties. The meeting reviewed the manner in which obsolete CRTs are presently handled and also discussed the future challenges faced by the industry in handling such waste.

The summit was attended by representatives of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), states, nonprofit organizations, e-scrap recyclers and various trade groups. Officials from major CRT recycling firms including Closed Loop Refining and Recovery, Kuusakoski, Nulife Glass and Universal Recycling Technologies participated in the session.

The participants urged the EPA to formulate stricter regulatory measures to address future problems. The government agencies should work closely with industry players in developing best practices guidelines towards safe disposal of CRTs. The meeting also called for new permitting standards for facilities that host long-term storage of CRTs.

The US EPA also announced that it has arranged an open session for those interested to contribute to CRT management. The session will be held during the E-scrap 2014 Conference in Orlando on October 23rd 1.00 to 2.30 pm. In addition to this, an open session on sustainable electronics will be held from 3 to 4.30 pm.
