Unifor and Kenora Forests Products signs deal to restart sawmill

MONTREAL (Scrap Monster): Unifor has entered into a long term contract with Kenora Forests Products (KFP) to restart sawmill operations. This follows the successful reopening of Ear Falls, northwestern Ontario sawmill by EACOM Timber Corporation after five long years of closure.

The long term deal takes effect this fall and will run through 2020. Under the deal, Unifor will make significant capital investment towards modernization of the mill and installation of additional saw line. The deal now awaits final approval from Ministry of Natural Resources for the mill’s wood supply.

The mill-restart is expected to restore hundreds of direct and indirect jobs. This will mainly benefit the aboriginal community in the area in addition to Kenora residents. The unionized workers are also promised of key monetary and language improvement. It is agreed that 30% of the mill’s workforce will be reserved for members from aboriginal community.

Recently EACOM had reconstructed its Ear Falls sawmill which was closed in December 2009 following the US housing market collapse. This is believed to have inspired Unifor to sign the long-term deal for mill-restart.
