UK's recovered paper exports gain significantly

EDGWARE (Scrap Monster): UK has once again emerged as Europe’s leading exporter of recovered fibre by volume. The country’s total shipments of recovered paper gained significantly during the initial ten-month period of the year.

The recovered paper exports by the UK during January to October in 2014 totaled 3.735 million tonnes, citing latest data released by the UK’s Confederation of Paper Industries and HM Revenue & Customs. The above figure is inclusive of deliveries to all overseas destinations including China, which reported strong decline in recovered paper demand. The export figure suggests robust growth of 6% year-on-year. The shipments by the UK during the corresponding ten-month period in 2013 had totaled 3.524 million tons.

According to data, mixed paper shipments during the period witnessed sharp rise of 35.3% over the previous year. The mixed paper shipments totaled 1.204 million tonnes during Jan-Oct ’14 as against 890,000 tonnes in 2013. The exports of corrugated & kraft paper edged higher by 2.8% to 2.046 million tonnes.

On the other hand, exports of high grade fibre plunged to almost one-third over the previous year. The exports totaled 95,562 tonnes, dropping by 33.1%. The shipment of newspaper also fell sharply during the ten-month period. Newspaper exports declined by 22.4% to 391,418 tonnes.

Meantime, the domestic mill consumption of all grades of recovered paper inched lower by 3.5% than the previous year to 3.098 million tonnes. The collection volumes increased 2.1% to total 6.717 million tonnes.
