UK recovered paper exports likely to touch record highs in 2015

CANTERBURY (Scrap Monster): The latest export statistics released by the Confederation of Paper Industries and HM Revenue & Customs indicates that the recovered paper exports during the entire year 2015 may likely surpass the previous highs recorded during 2007 and 2008.

As per statistics, the recovered paper exports from the UK during first three quarters of the year totaled 3.625 million tonnes. The shipments during the nine-month period of the current year have jumped higher by 8% when compared with the shipments during the corresponding period last year. The UK recovered paper exports during Jan-Sep ’14 had totaled 3.363 million tonnes.

If the exports maintain the current momentum in the final quarter of the year, the whole year exports may likely surpass the record highs of 4.847 million tonnes exported during 2008. It must be noted that the 2015 yearly exports may well exceed the 2007 exports total of 4.658 million tonnes, the second highest in the history of the country.

During January to September this year, UK’s exports of high grade recovered paper surged higher significantly by nearly 59% to 132,762 tonnes. Exports of corrugated and kraft paper grew almost 10% year-on-year to 2.021 million tonnes during Jan-Sep ’15. Meantime, exports of mixed and mechanical papers stood marginally higher by 2.2% at 1.471 million tonnes, relative to exports during the corresponding nine-month period in 2014.

Meanwhile, UK recovered paper collection during the initial three quarters of the year dropped by 2.4% to 5.907 million tonnes. Domestic consumption by mills fell drastically by nearly 11% over the previous year to 2.496 million tonnes.

It must be noted that UK’s combined exports of all grades had posted a growth of 4.4% to 4.436 million tonnes in 2014. At the same time, consumption of recovered paper by domestic mills had fallen by 3.2% to 3.714 million tonnes during the previous year. Also, collection volumes during the entire year 2014 had edged higher by 1.4% to 8.014 million tonnes.

CPI is the leading organization working on behalf of the UK's Paper-based Industries. It represents the supply chain for paper, comprising recovered paper merchants, paper and board manufacturers and converters, corrugated packaging producers and makers of soft tissue papers.
