UK Battery recycling surpasses the collection target for 2012

LONDON  (Scrap Monster) : According to the recent data released by the UK Environment Agency, the country has surpassed the battery collection target during the year 2012.

The collection rate reported during the year 2012 was 28%, which is well above the targeted 25% collection rate. The total collected waste batteries in UK during the year were 10,915 tons, which is well above the 9563 tons level set by the Batteries Directive.

It should be noted that the collection rates during 2010 and 2011 were 9.45% and 18.03% respectively.

As per data, the collection rate diminished towards the end of the year. The rate was as high as 32% during the first half of the year. The collections dropped significantly during the last quarter of the year. The total number of waste portable batteries collected during the last quarter of the year was  only 2120 tons, which is almost 35% lower when compared to 3225 tons collected during the first quarter.

The Environment Agency has expressed satisfaction on the high collection rates achieved.

Under the terms of the European Union’s Batteries Directive, batteries are categorized into three groups: automotive, industrial and portable. Portable batteries are the only category to which a recycling target has been attached
