Tyre recycling levy could cost 500 jobs, says industry group

An industry group is claiming that a new levy to pay for the recycling of used tyres could cost hundreds of jobs.

The measure's being brought in by Environment Minister Alan Kelly.

But the Independent Tyre Wholesalers and Retailers Association claims it will add €3 to the price of car tyres and €10 to heavy vehicle tyres.

The group's claiming the measure could lead to 500 job losses, as motorists head north to buy cheaper tyres.

It says the industry already recycles tyres without the need for a levy.
