ANKARA (Scrap Monster): The most recent statistics released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) suggests significant jump in steel scrap imports by the country during the month of December last year.

According to TUIK data, Turkey imported 1.74 million tons of steel scrap during Dec ’15. The imports surged higher by 34.9% when matched with the imports during the same month a year before. The Turkish steel scrap import volume had amounted to 1.29 million tons during Dec ’14. When compared with the previous month, the imports during Dec ’15 were up by nearly 34%. The average value of imports dropped sharply from $336 per tonne in Dec ’14 to $193 per tonne in December last year.

The US was the largest scrap exporter to Turkey during Dec ’15. The US scrap shipments to Turkey surged higher by almost 74% year-on-year to 449,512 tonnes in Dec ’15. In second place was the UK with 303,201 tonnes. The scrap imports from the UK during the month increased five-folds over the previous year. The third largest exporter was the Netherlands. The exports from the country soared by almost 115% to 197,744 tonnes.

The Turkish steel scrap imports totaled 16.25 million tons during the entire year 2015. The imports were down by 14.8% when compared with the year before. The Turkish steel scrap imports had totaled 19.07 million tons during 2014. The scrap imports during the year averaged at $264 per tonne in 2015, as compared with the average scrap import price of $375 per tonne in 2014.

The largest exporter of steel scrap to Turkey during the year was the US. Turkey’s steel scrap imports from the US totaled 3.84 million tons, down by 3.8% over the previous year. The second largest exporter was the UK with 2.46 million tons. The steel scrap imports by Turkey from the UK dropped significantly by 15.50% year-over-year. In third place was Russia with deliveries totaling 2.42 million tonnes. The other key scrap suppliers to Turkey during 2015 were Belgium (1.33 million tonnes, down 12.5%), the Netherlands (1.16 million tonnes, down 22.1%), Romania (553,125 tonnes, down 56.1%) and Ukraine (1.15 mt, up 35.9%).
