Turkish scrap imports plunged 47% in Feb '14 over the month: TUIK

ANKARA (Scrap Monster): The recent data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) suggests that scrap imports by the country fell sharply during the month of February this year.

According to TUIK data, scrap imports by Turkey totaled 1.03 million tons in February this year. The imports plunged over 47% when compared with the previous month. The country’s scrap imports had totaled 1.95 million tons during January this year. The Turkish scrap imports during Feb ’14 were down 19.5% when compared with the imports during Feb ’13.

The US was the largest scrap exporter to Turkey during Feb ’14.The scrap imports from the US totaled 192,365 tons during the month. The Turkish scrap imports from the US fell sharply from 475,000 tons during January. The second largest source of scrap imports by Turkey was Russia. The Russian scrap exports to Turkey totaled 174,976 tons.

However, the cumulative scrap imports by Turkey during Jan-Feb ’14 were up 7% when compared with the imports during the corresponding two-month period in 2013. The scrap imports by Turkey during the initial two-month period in 2014 totaled 2.98 million tons. Also, the country’s domestic scrap supply volumes declined to 1.70 million tons. Turkey’s scrap consumption too fell 1.5% year-on-year to 4.68 million tonnes during the two-month period.
