Trade body publishes list of Leading Refined Tin producers in 2016

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ITRI has published the list of top ten refined tin producers during the year 2016. Four out of ten producers reported rise in output during the year. Four Chinese firms managed to feature in the top-ten list. The largest producer of refined tin in 2016 was Chinese Yunnan Tin, followed by Malaysian Malaysia Smelting Corp. and Indonesian PT Timah in second and third places respectively.

Yunnan Tin produced 76,000 tonnes of refined tin during the year, rising marginally by 0.7% over the previous year. The refined tin output by Malaysia Smelting Corp declined sharply by 11.3% over the previous year to total 26,802 tonnes in 2016. PT Timah’s refined tin output too declined by 13.4% to 23,756 tonnes in 2016. The company’s refined tin output had totaled 27,432 tonnes during 2015.

Of the four Chinese companies in the list, two reported decline in production. The companies to report production decline during 2016 were Guangxi China Tin and Gejiu Zi-Li. The refined tin output by Gejiu Zi-Li declined significantly by 25.5%, when compared with the previous year. The production by the company totaled 8,200 during the year. The company occupied last place in the top ten list. Guangxi China Tin, the world’s eighth largest refined tin producer of the year reported 1% decline in output year-on-year. The output by the company totaled 10,984 tonnes during the year.

Meantime, the Chinese mine and secondary refined tin output dropped considerably in 2016. But this was offset by increased supply of tin ore and concentrate from Myanmar. The latest data released by the Chinese Customs authorities suggest marginal rise in imports of tin ore, concentrates and refined metal during the month of December last year. The gross weight of tin ore and concentrate imports by the country during the month was 46,538 tonnes with an estimated 5,400 tonnes contained tin. The imports of ores and concentrates were up sharply by 5% over the previous year. Myanmar accounted for nearly 98.8% of the Chinese imports during the month. The country’s refined tin metal imports in December ’16 rose sharply by 44% over the previous year to 1,692 tonnes. Bolivia and Myanmar together accounted for 84% of tin metal import by China during the month.

Bolivia’s state-owned tin smelter, Empresa Metalúrgica Vinto (EMV) reported refined production of 13,111 tonnes in 2016, higher by 8.3% when matched with the previous year. The output fell short of the official target of 14,000 tonnes. The year 2016 saw full operation of the company's Ausmelt furnace, which was commissioned in September 2015.

Minsur in Peru reported 3.2% decline in refined production during the year. The production totaled 19,583 tonnes in 2016. The continuing decline in tin grades at San Rafael Mine was partially offset by the commissioning of a new ore sorting plant in May 2016. The company’s Brazilian operations remained strong. Minsur’s refined tin production from the country reported 4.8% jump to 5,873 tonnes.
