Tin Concentrate Imports from Myanmar Surged Higher in July

SEATTLE (ITRI.CO.UK): According to the latest customs statistics, China imports of tin concentrate from Myanmar totalled 25,602 tonnes in July, with an estimated tin content of 6,100 tonnes up 10% month on month and up around 70% year on year.

The total imports of tin-in-concentrate from January to July this year were estimated to be about 36,400 tonnes, up 6.5% compared to the same period of last year. Meanwhile, China's officially reported refined tin imports in July totalled 133 tonnes while exports totalled 352 tonnes.

ITRI View: The impact of rainy season on ore and concentrate shipments and production has been limited this year because of significant improvements to the main road in Wa between the mining area of Man Maw and the border with China. In addition, the remaining low-grade ore stock at the mine site is likely to support higher than usual tin concentrate production in the coming months. We have revised our outlook for Myanmar mine output in 2017 to 53,000 tonnes, unchanged from our estimate for 2016. We remain of the view that production is likely to fall in the years ahead due to the underlying decline in mining activity in Wa. This decline has been disguised this year by a run-down in low-grade ore stocks at the site following processing infrastructure improvements.
