Three-year recycling plan to ban paper in landfills

LINCOLN (Scrap Monster): The Lincoln City officials have proposed a three-year recycling plan to reduce landfill trash and boost recycling rates. The proposed ordinance is still in its draft stage, they said.

According to City officials, consumers will be allowed to drop off their recyclables to any of the nearly 30 recycling sites free of cost. Alternatively, they can get the recyclables and trash collected by City’s waste haulers at the cub, by paying stipulated fees.

The proposed ordinance plans to ban cardboard from Lincoln landfill by April next year. The ban for newsprint will come into effect in April 2018. Also, recyclable paper will be banned from landfill starting April 2019. City officials informed that materials such as Styrofoam, glass and plastics will be exempted from the ban.

As per studies, recycling of all paper is expected to reduce landfill’s waste by nearly 28%.

Meantime, Lincoln Public Works and Utilities Department has announced that a free household hazardous waste collection event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 7th at Zoetis, N.W. 4th St. and Cornhusker Highway. The event, open for Lincoln and Lancaster County residents is partially funded by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).

The accepted items include pesticides, lawn and garden chemicals, household cleaning products, paint thinners, stains, polishes and waxes, turpentine, oil-based paint, pool cleaning chemicals, flea and tick powders, rodent poison, charcoal starter fluids, mixed or old gasoline, brake or power steering fluids, and items containing mercury such as CFLs and thermometers.

On the other hand, items such as latex paint, motor oil, fertilizers, gas grill cylinders, medicines and pharmaceutical waste, electronics and batteries are not accepted in the event.
