The small aluminum sheet device that could reduce aircraft noise!

BRUSSELS (Scrap Monster): The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has developed a small aluminum device that could substantially reduce the whistling sound in Airbus single-aisle jet aircraft.

According to reports, Airbus will be installing ‘Vortex Generator’ on all their new model A320 planes. Also, Lufthansa, Air France and other air carriers are also planning to install the new device to their existing fleet which has reported sound issues.

It took almost a decade of research by DLR to come out with the new device that is made of 5-cm triangular piece of aluminum sheet. The new device when fitted to the aircraft reduces the noise generated when air passes over circular openings. According to DLR, the device could produce a noise reduction of up to 6 decibels. ‘Vortex Generator’ achieves this noise reduction by diverting wind from vents upstream.

According to DLR, the device is specifically meant for a specific category of aircraft which has noise issue. The current generation of aircraft is relatively quieter.

Flyover measurements showed that the vortex generators eliminate two unpleasant frequencies, which reduces the total noise produced by the aircraft when approaching an airport
