Thailand's scrap imports surged higher in Sep '14

BEIJING (Scrap Monster): The latest import statistics indicate that the scrap imports by Thailand during September this year rose significantly over the year. However, the scrap imports saw modest decline when compared with the previous month.

The scrap imports by Thailand during the month of September this year totaled 180,000 tons. The imports surged higher by 212.8% when compared with the scrap imports during the same month a year ago. On the other hand, the scrap imports dropped 15.4% over the previous month. Thailand had imported 213,000 tons of scrap during the month of August this year.

The largest scrap exporter to Thailand during Sep ’14 was the US. The scrap imports by Thailand from the US totaled 90,000 tons. The scrap imports from the country accounted for nearly 50% of the total scrap imports by Thailand during the month. The scrap exports from the US to Thailand soared significantly higher when compared with the imports during September ’13.

The second largest scrap exporter to Thailand during the month was Australia. The imports from the country totaled 34,000 tons, accounting for nearly one-fifth of the total scrap imports by Thailand during the month.

The country’s scrap imports during initial nine months of the year totaled 1.06 million tons. The scrap imports were 64.7% higher upon comparison with the imports during the corresponding nine-month period last year.

The scrap imports by Thailand are projected to touch 1.41 million tons during the entire year 2014.
