Taiwan's ferrous scrap imports dropped 4% in 2014

BEIJING (Scrap Monster) : According to latest trade data released by the Taiwan Directorate General of Customs, the country’s total ferrous scrap imports during the entire year 2014 declined by 4.1% when compared with the imports during the previous year. The ferrous scrap imports by the country totaled 4.272 million tons during 2014 as compared with the imports of 4.453 million tons during 2013.

The US was the largest exporter of ferrous scrap to Taiwan during the year. The country’s imports from the US totaled 2.253 million tons, accounting for 52.7% of the total imports by Taiwan during the year. However, ferrous scrap imports from the US dropped sharply by 18.5% when matched with 2.763 million tons imported during 2013.

The second largest exporter was Japan. The exports from Japan to Taiwan totaled 557,290 tons. The imports from Japan accounted for nearly 13% of the total imports by Taiwan during the entire year. The imports from Japan surged higher by 81.1% during 2014, in comparison with 307,648 tons in 2013. In third place was Hong Kong with 259,613 tons. Hong Kong’s market share in Taiwan’s yearly imports stood at 6.1%. The imports from Hong Kong jumped higher by 28.8% in comparison with the imports of 201,641 tons in 2013.

The other main exporters of ferrous scrap to Taiwan during 2014 were: Philippines (161,613 tons, up 69.6% y-o-y), Australia (136,462 tons, up 2.1%) and Canada (105,295 tons, down 23.1%).

The scrap imports by Taiwan during the month of December alone totaled 375,000 tons. The ferrous scrap imports managed to hold above the 300,000 mark for the fourth month in a row.
