Surveillance video captures scrap metal thefts in Philadelphia

NEW YORK (Scrap Monster): The footage from a surveillance camera revealed two scrap metal theft incidents in the City. The video shows a Streets Department worker and a School District maintenance department employee involved in metal theft from their work premises and selling them to recyclers for cash. The employees are not identified yet.

The Streets worker used forklift to load items such as guardrails and storage containers into trailer. The items were dropped in NDV Recycling, 3630 N. Second St. According to the recycler, the employee had collected cash for scrap metal at least six times in the past four months. The firm confirmed to have paid the worker nearly $850 in return for stolen scrap metal.

The School District employee picked scrap metals including brass scrap from his workplace on several occasions and sold them at M Dunn Recycling at 3611 Welsh Rd. He is believed to be involved in such acts for a period of nearly two years. The recycler admitted that the employee has come to them at least 30 times. He, on several occasions has visited the recycler during official working hours. He was also found to have misused the School District vehicle to drop the picked items. The recycler also indicated that the employee was paid a total of $1,750.

The City Controller said no criminal charges have been filed, noting that investigators from the affected departments would decide whether to seek prosecution.
