Steel industry body publishes 2016 Position paper on Safety and Health

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has published its 2016 Position paper on Safety and Health. The Association had observed its 3rd Steel Safety Day on April 28th.

The position paper lists six Safety and Health principles for the steel industry.

1) All injuries and work-related illness can and must be prevented

2) Managers are responsible and accountable for safety and health performance

3) Employee engagement and training is essential

4) Working safely is a condition of employment

5) Excellence in safety and health drives excellent business results

6) Safety and health must be integrated into all business management processes

According to Edwin Basson, Director General of worldsteel, the position paper reiterates its commitment to safety and health principles. Safety and health of employees in the steel industry is more important than anything, he noted. The Association had earlier decided to focus on “Falling from height”, which is considered as one among the top five common cause of accidents.

Basson noted that the steel industry has been successful in reducing Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) by 71% during the past decade. However, there is still progress to be made in order to achieve the ultimate target of ‘zero incidents’.

The World Steel Association (worldsteel) is one of the largest and most dynamic industry associations in the world. worldsteel members represent approximately 85% of the world's steel production, including over 150 steel producers with 9 of the 10 largest steel companies, national and regional steel industry associations, and steel research institutes.
