Steel Dynamics, Inc. declared winner of the prestigious ‘Metals Company of the Year’ Award

The Fort Wayne, Indiana based steel producer Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI) has been announced as the winner of the prestigious ‘Metals Company of the Year’ award.

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): The Fort Wayne, Indiana based steel producer Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI) has been announced as the winner of the prestigious ‘Metals Company of the Year’ award. The award, being part of Platts Global Metals Award, was announced during the black-tie celebration event held on 19 May 2016 at the Marriott Grosvenor Square in London. The award is in recognition of all-around excellence in executing a total metals strategy with a special importance to the company’s commitment to sustainability.

Clear Winner

The judging panel praised the company’s boldness in going ahead with the acquisition of mini-mill Severstal Columbus in 2014. It also commented SDI’s ongoing focus on creating innovative products and designing new production methods that have contributed to the strong financial performance of the company. SDI has successfully achieved higher returns than its peers, the judging panel noted.

Incidentally, the judging panel comprised of Alberto Hassan, Former President and CEO, Orinoco Iron; David E. King,Former CEO and Director, LME; Jim Lennon, Former Chairman of Commodities, Macquarie; Rana Som, Former Chairman, NMDC and Hindustan Copper and Michael Setterdahl, Former Managing Director of Nucor Trading.

Imogen Dillon Hatcher, president of S&P Global Platts congratulated SDI for winning the prestigious honor. He noted that the company has made important contributions to the metals sector even at times of volatility and challenges.

CEO of the Year

The award was won by Marsha Serlin, chief executive officer of United Scrap Metal, Inc., the U.S.-based recycling services provider. The award is in recognition of Serlin’s consistent growth and strong performance in the midst of challenges. The finalists in this category included Lourenco Goncalves - Cliffs Natural Resources Inc, Ahmed Abou Hashima - Egyptian Steel, K.D. Diwan - Hindustan Copper Ltd, Sajjan Jindal - JSW Steel Ltd, Dr. Herbert Hermens - Keech Australia, Brian D. Robbins - MidWest Materials, Inc. and Benjamin Yao - SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp.

Lifetime Achievement Award

The winner of the award was Lou Schorsch, former CEO for ArcelorMittal Americas for his successful orchestration of a diverse group of assets in the aftermath of the Arcelor/Mittal merger and also for his strategic vision in taking the company forward.

Rising Star Company Award

Alameda, CA-based Aqua Metals was judged the winner of the Rising Star Award which recognizes the achievements of either a genuine startup business or an existing business that has moved into a new field. The company, established in 2013, was recognized for its innovative Aqua Refining technique –a clean and modular alternative to conventional smelter-based recycling for lead-acid batteries.
