Springfield police calls for new ordinance to crack down on scrap metal theft

SPRINGFIELD (Scrap Monster): The City of Springfield plans to expand the scrap metal theft law in the wake of alarming rise in the number of scrap metal theft incidents.

According to the existing law established in 2011, scrap metal yards are required to report sales exceeding $50. The law has helped to identify almost 50 incidents where the sold scrap metal was allegedly stolen. However, the law fails to catch hold of thieves who sell scrap materials worth less than $50, as these cases go unreported. The City intends to amend the existing law by making it mandatory for scrap yards to report all transactions-sales or exchange irrespective of the deal amount.

The change in law is being welcomed by Springfield Police, saying that the proposed amendment would provide them with a fighting chance to nab scrap metal thieves. The thefts can be controlled to great extent if the outlet to get rid of the stolen materials is properly sealed.

Police Chief Paul Williams urged the City Council to take up the proposal by including it in the agenda for Council’s next meeting. He also called for imposition of 72-hour waiting period for salvage vehicles and vehicle parts accepted by scrap yards. During this period, the items should be available for inspection by enforcement officials.
