South Korea to return contaminated scrap metal imports from Japan

SEOUL (Scrap Monster): The South Korean Nuclear Safety Commission has announced its decision to return the shipment of scrap metal from Japan that was found to contain radiation-contaminated materials.

The 20-ton scrap metal shipment from Japan had arrived at a seaport in the country’s southeastern Gyeongsang Province on Thursday. Upon inspection, small traces of Cesium-137 were detected in nearly 20 kilograms of the scrap metal. According to the Commission, the shipment is presently stored at a quarantine facility but soon will be returned to Japan.

Following the nuclear reactor leakage at Japanese Fukushima plant in March 2011, South Korea had intensified checks on imports from Japan. The Commission also had installed radiation detection mechanisms at all major sea ports to effectively detect any shipment of radioactive materials.

Conversely, the latest government data indicates that the South Korean scrap exports to Japan totaled 7,000 tons during June this year, lower by 3.5% when compared with the exports during June last year.
