South American crude steel output remained flat in Mar '14

SAO PAULO (Scrap Monster): According to the recent data published by the World Steel Association, the crude steel production by South American countries remained absolutely flat during March this year.

The total crude steel production by Argentina during March was 472,000 tonnes, 0.9% higher than the March 2013 production of 468,000 tonnes. Brazil produced 2.890 Million tonnes of crude steel, marginally higher by 1.5% when compared to 2.848 Million tonnes production achieved during March 2013. The Chilean March crude steel production went up marginally higher by 2.9% from 97,000 tonnes in March ‘13 to 100,000 tonnes in March this year. The total cude steel production by Colombia remained flat at 100,000 tonnes in March this year.

Ecuador recorded big jump in output year-on-year. The crude steel output by Ecuador was 50,000 tonnes in March this year,14.5% higher from 44,000 tonnes during March last year.  Paraguay’s crude steel output surged 52.9% during the month from 3,000 tonnes in March last year to 5,000 tonnes in March this year.

The crude steel output by Peru jumped higher by 18.1% year-on-year from 85,000 tonnes to 100,000 tonnes. The crude steel output of Uruguay remained flat at 7,000 tonnes. Venezuelan production slipped 35% year-on-year from 208,000 tonnes to 135,000 tonnes.

The following table provides cumulative crude steel output for the first three months in 2014 in comparison with those during same period in 2013.
