DEP holds a public meeting to discuss the cleaning of the scrap yard
PENNSYLVANIA (Scrap Monster): Department of Environmental Protection in Pennsylvania holds a public meeting on January 11 to discuss the cleaning of an earlier scrap yard on the Ohio River in Beaver country.
Marino Brothers operated the three-acre site as a scrap yard from the 1920s to 1998, when the business closed and the land was donated to Rochester Borough. Most of the scrap and equipment has been removed and all buildings have been demolished.
Since 1998, the DEP has conducted multiple investigations at the site and has found groundwater contamination and soil contaminated with PCBs, and metals including copper, cadmium, zing, lead, chromium and mercury, Waste&Recycling reported
DEP is now planning to make the area clean, taking ideas and association from the public. DEP is proposing that all scrap and waste be removed so the area can be covered with clean fill and soil, seeded and mulched to grow vegetation. DEP will also pursue the responsible parties for cost recovery. The cleanup cost is estimated as $800,000.
During the public hearing, citizens will have an opportunity to present up to three minutes of oral testimony regarding the proposal. Written comment also will be accepted. DEP will provide a written response to all significant testimony or written comment provided during the public hearing and public comment period, Waste&Recycling reports.
