Scrap metal yard ordered to shut down after serious code violations

CHICAGO (Scrap Monster): The City officials have ordered General Iron Industries to shut down the company's scrap-metal facility along Marcy, Kingsbury and Clifton streets, south of Armitage Avenue after observing serious code violations. Meantime, the owner of the facility stated that all attempts will be made to reopen the facility at the earliest.

The order to shut down the facility was issued by the Department of Buildings inspectors. This follows the two-day inspection at the property by the buildings and fire departments. The inspection which completed on April 26th had cited serious violations grouped under seven different categories. According to the order, the facility was found “dangerous, hazardous and unsafe” and an “imminent threat to the public at large”.

The inspection had found issues with respect to operation of metal shredders. It had also cited electrical and structural violations. According to City officials, inspections had found an elevator shaft left open by removal of an elevator at one of the buildings. Later, the company officials took steps to secure the shafts. According to Buildings Department spokeswoman Mimi Simon, the company has done enough to vacate the operation and has post security guards at the premises. The company management has already scheduled a meeting with City officials in a bid to address the building code violations.

Meantime, Adam Labkon, a member of the family that owns General Iron, in an emailed statement stated that the company is complying with the city order and working closely with the Buildings Department to address their concerns. He noted that the company is committed to the safety of its more than 100 employees. All attempts are in full swing to address the concerns and reopen the facility at the earliest.

General Iron Industries of Chicago, IL is a family owned and operated Scrap Metal Recycling yard that buys copper, brass and aluminum, lite iron, stainless steel and more.
