Scrap metal container theft uncovered in China

BEIJING (Scrap Monster): According to local television channel report, several people belonging to a scrap metal theft gang have been arrested in Guangzhou, China. Seven members belonging to the racket were arrested while trying to steal copper scrap from sealed containers.

According to the report, stacked 40-foot containers laden with scrap metals were taken to Foshan in Guangzhou province. The red metal (copper and brass) scrap was removed from the containers containing shredded mixed metal scrap such as the zorba grade. In order to maintain the original weight of the container, dirt was being poured into the container.

Over past several years, there has been an alarming increase in claims of theft of scrap metal from containers. The illegal activity has also spoiled the trade relationships between scrap exporters around the world and Chinese importers. South China and Hong Kong are said to have crime gangs who engage in container theft activities. The 2012 Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) Recycling Conference had addressed this issue in detail.

The Zhaoqin port complex had been in news recently for container break-in incidents, as they are held in bond before being transported to scrap dealers. Several such incidents of container break-ins were reported from Sihui/Mafang terminals. BIR had even urged its members to book exports to different Chinese ports.
