Scrap imports by Thailand surged 32% in Feb '14

BANGKOK (Scrap Monster): As per latest government data, scrap imports by Thailand surged sharply in February over the previous year. However, the imports declined on month-on-month basis.

The country’s total scrap imports amounted to 64,000 tons during the month of February this year. The imports surged 31.9% when compared with the country’s scrap imports during the same month a year ago. Thailand’s scrap imports had totaled 48,500 tons during February ’13. However, when compared with the imports during January this year, the country’s scrap imports during February were down by 6.8%.

The largest scrap supplier to Thailand during the month was Australia. The imports from Australia totaled 30,000 tons, accounting for nearly 50% of the total scrap imports by Thailand during the month. The Feb ’14 scrap imports from Australia were up 28% over the previous year, according to data.

The cumulative scrap imports by Thailand during the initial two-month period of the year totaled 134,000 tons. The scrap imports during Jan-Feb this year were 15.2% higher when compared with the imports during the corresponding two-month period in 2013.

The total scrap imports by Thailand during the entire year 2014 are estimated at 800,000 tons.
