Scrap Exports by World Countries Exhibited Mixed Trend

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The scrap export trade exhibited mixed trends in the final quarter of the previous year.

The scrap exports by the US surged higher by nearly 45% over the previous year in November last year to total nearly 1.6 million tons. The combined exports during Jan-Nov ’17 too were up by nearly 15% to 13.8 million tons. The largest destination of US scrap exports was Turkey. The country imported around 3.3 million tons of scrap from the US, accounting for almost one-fourth of the total scrap exports by the US. Mexico and Taiwan with imports of 1.6 million tons and 1.3 million tons respectively were ranked second and third.

The top importer of Russian scrap was Turkey. The exports to Turkey declined over 11% to total around 1.8 million tons. Belarus (1.1 million tons) and South Korea (800,000 tons) were the other key importers of Russian scrap during Jan-Oct ’17.

Hong Kong too reported sharp decline in scrap exports during the month of November last year. The monthly exports registered 8% decline to total 121,000 tons. Meantime, the cumulative exports during the first eleven months of the year totaled around 1.25 million tons, marginally higher by 0.7% over the previous year. Vietnam was the primary destination of scrap exports from Hong Kong.

The steel scrap exports by Singapore dropped considerably by 16% to touch 61,962 tons during October. The exports totaled 664,401 tons during Jan-Oct ’17. On the other hand, Australian scrap export volumes jumped higher significantly by 68% to total 196,295 tons in Oct ’17. The cumulative exports during the Jan-Oct ’17 period totaled 1.576 million tons, surging higher by over 26% when compared with the corresponding ten-month period in 2016.
