Scrap Copper and Aluminum Exports by the US Surged 10% through August

The US exports of aluminum scrap totaled 990,395 tonnes in January to August in 2017. The exports were up by 10.8% when compared with the corresponding eight-month period in 2016.

Scrap Copper and Aluminum Exports by the US Surged 10% through August

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest trade data published by the US Census Bureau and International Trade Commission states that exports of aluminum and copper scrap by the country surged higher considerably during the opening eight months of 2017.

The US exports of aluminum scrap totaled 990,395 tonnes in January to August in 2017. The exports were up by 10.8% when compared with the corresponding eight-month period in 2016. The US aluminum scrap exports had totaled 893,900 tonnes in Jan-Aug ’16. The leading export destination of US aluminum scrap was China. The exports to that country surged higher by 13.5% year-on-year to total 521,277 tonnes, accounting for almost 53% of the total US aluminum scrap exports during the period.

The aluminum scrap deliveries to South Korea and Mexico too recorded higher volumes. The exports to South Korea were up by 23.3% to 111,287 tonnes. Meantime, imports by Mexico witnessed 20.2% jump over the previous year to total 103,395 tonnes during January to August this year. On the other hand, exports to Canada registered marginal decline by 3.1% over the previous year to total 72,542 tonnes.

According to the Census Bureau and International Trade Commission, the exports of copper and copper alloy scrap by the country registered 9.5% growth over the previous year. The exports during the first eight months of 2017 totaled 673,302 tonnes. The leading importer was China with imports of 463,658 tonnes. China accounted for almost 69% of the total US exports. The Chinese imports of copper and copper alloy surged higher by 10.2% over the corresponding eight-month period in 2016.

The second largest export destination was Canada. The Canadian imports surged higher by 32.2% to 65,877 tonnes. In third place was Hong Kong with imports of 27,378 tonnes. The US exports of copper and copper alloy scrap to Hong Kong recorded substantial year-on-year gain of over 67%. The other key market was Germany with imports of 19,591 tonnes. The German imports were down significantly by 12% over the previous year.

Meantime, the combined ferrous scrap exports by the US during the first eight months of the year totaled 9.32 million tons. This is higher by 9.2% over the previous year. The US had exported only 8.53 million tons of scrap during Jan-Aug in 2016. The largest export destination of US scrap during Jan-Aug ’17 was Turkey. The exports to that country totaled nearly 2.02 million tons. In second place was Mexico with imports of 1.26 million tons.
